The inspiration for this website came from a Scripture song I heard over 10 years ago at a ladies retreat:

Like Apples of Gold in pictures of silver
A word fitly spoken shall be,
Like Apples of Gold in pictures of silver
Let my life bring glory to thee.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Proverbs 25:11

Although some of the "stories" listed are made up, the Scriptural truths they illustrate are very real and can be of great benefit in a Christian's walk with the Lord and as illustrations for the lost.

It is my heart's desire that amongst the pages of this website, the Christian find words of encouragement and be spurred on to service for our Lord, and that seekers of the truth find Salvation in the timeless truths of God's Word for these troubled times.

Christmas Without Jesus?

Christmas Without Jesus?

Christmas without Jesus, How can this really be?
And yet for many years it was this way for me.
I hung the lights and wrapped the many, many toys
For all my little ones, my precious girls and boys.

I gave them all that I possessed of worldly gifts and things,
But I did not have the greatest gift that only Jesus brings.
Though I gave them all I had right from the very start,
I could not give them Jesus for He wasn’t in my heart.

Then, Praise the precious Lamb of God, one day He came,
He spoke to my empty heart and called me by my name.
Now I have more to give my children than gifts on earth.
I give them Jesus, God’s Firstborn Son, whose lowly birth
Prepared the way for all mankind to look to Him and see,
Christmas without Jesus, This really cannot be.

Christmas In Heaven

Christmas In Heaven

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below,
with tiny lights like heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.

The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear
for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year

I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
but the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring,
for it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart,
for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I can’t tell you of the splendor or the peace here in this place.
Can you just imagine Christmas with our Savior face to face?

I’ll ask Him to lift your spirit as I tell Him of your love,
so then pray for one another as you lift your eyes above.

Please let your hearts be joyful and let your spirit sing,
for I am spending Christmas in heaven and I’m walking with the King.

Lysandra Kay Bencke was my thirteen year old handicapped daughter.  On Christmas day 1997, Lysandra had a seizure and was in a coma for five days before she passed away. During those five days I wrote “Christmas in Heaven”.

The Bible

The Bible

The Bible reveals the mind of God,
the state of man,
the way of salvation,
the doom of sinners,
and the happiness of believers.

Its doctrines are holy,
Its precepts are binding,
its histories are true,
and its decisions are immutable.

Read it to be wise,
believe it to be safe,
and practice it to be holy.
It contains light to direct you,
food to support you,
and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler’s map,
the pilgrim’s staff,
the pilot’s compass,
the soldier’s sword,
and the Christian’s charter.
Here, too, Paradise is restored,
Heaven is opened,
and the gates of Hell disclosed.

The Lord Jesus Christ is its grand subject,
our good its design,
and the glory of God its end.

Let it fill the memory,
rule the heart,
and guide the feet.
Read it slowly,
frequently,
prayerfully.
It is a mine of wealth,
a paradise of glory,
and a river of pleasure.

It is given you in life,
will be opened at the judgement,
and be remembered forever.
It involves the highest responsibility,
will reward the greatest labor,
and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

Owned, it is riches;
studied, it is wisdom;
trusted, it is salvation;
lived, it is character;
and obeyed, it is power.

Are You My Father?

Are You My Father?

A little boy was left one day,
On the streets of a big city town.
His mother left him on the steps of a church,
And his father could not be found.

The preacher having no children of his own,
Smiled at the young boys face.
He allowed him to work and live in the church.
The young boy soon found his place.

The boy would sit in the very front pew,
On Sundays to hear the man teach.
And on Wednesdays he was in the choir loft,
as the church sang, and the pastor preached.

Every time the two sat down.
For a meal throughout the day.
The boy asked a question that was on his heart,
Before they bowed to pray.

Looking so sincerely into the mans eyes,
The boy’s pain would begin to bother.
Always the same question, “Sir”, he’d ask,
“Please tell me, are you my father?”

The pastor’s reply was the same sweet words,
In love he had spoken many a time.
“You are my angel that was sent by God,
in my heart you will always be mine.”

The days passed by and the seasons changed,
And fall was followed by a winters chill.
The pastor was kneeled at the boy’s footboard,
Praying for the boy was ill.

It was late one night when the boy passed on,
Without pain or even a moan.
There was a peaceful grin on his lovely face,
And the pastor knew he went home.

The boy found himself in the arms of a man,
His face so sweet and kind.
And as he sat on Jesus’ knee,
One question was on his mind.

Jesus smiled down at him,
And said, “I know about your mother.”
“Please ask me the question you have on your heart.”
And the boy asked, “Are you my father?”

A smile consumed Jesus’ entire face.
The boy’s burden then lifted a ton.
Jesus said, “I am whatever you need.”
“And yes, child, you are my son.”

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon His shoulder:
and His (Jesus’) name shall be called Wonderful,
Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The Anvil of God’s Word

The Anvil Of God’s Word

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
When looking in, I saw upon the floor,
Old hammers worn with beating years of time.

“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he; then with a twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”

And so, I thought, the anvil of God’s Word,
For ages, skeptics blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.

A Mother’s Prayer

A Mother’s Prayer

They grow up so fast Lord
These children You put in my care
It seems like only yesterday
I was getting gum out of their hair.

From a babe to a toddler
To a child going out to play
Now they are adolescents
Each striving to go their own way.

No longer are their trucks and dolls
Scattered all across the floor
They are busy with their own lives
Always heading out the door.

It’s so hard to let them go Lord
But I know it was meant to be
I’ve taught them of Your ways
Now I pray they’ll always turn to Thee.

Watch over them dear God
On their way to adulthood
Stand beside them on life’s rocky road
As You promised that You would.

Dedicated to my children:
Billy, Amy, and Sabrina.

Alma Herrington.
